Best overall option: S-Bahn S8 or S9

The S-Bahn S8 and S9 are the best airport-to-city options for most visitors. They run from Frankfurt Airport Regionalbahnhof to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and continue through central Frankfurt toward stations such as Hauptwache and Konstablerwache.

The journey to Hauptbahnhof is short, usually around 11 to 15 minutes. This is faster than taxi during many traffic conditions and much cheaper for solo travelers and couples. It is also the most predictable option because it avoids road traffic.

The S-Bahn is especially useful if your hotel is near Hauptbahnhof, Bahnhofsviertel, Innenstadt, Hauptwache, Konstablerwache, Sachsenhausen via onward connection, Westend or Messe via local transfer.

Choose S-Bahn S8 or S9 if:

• you want the fastest and cheapest airport-to-city route,
• your hotel is near Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, Hauptwache or Konstablerwache,
• you have one manageable suitcase,
• you want to avoid road traffic,
• you are comfortable buying an RMV ticket before boarding,
• you plan to transfer to U-Bahn, tram or another S-Bahn in the city,
• you are not continuing by ICE or long-distance train directly from the airport.

How to take the S-Bahn from Frankfurt Airport to the city

1. After arrivals, follow signs for Regionalbahnhof, Regional trains, S-Bahn or Train stations.
2. If you arrive at Terminal 2, use the SkyLine or airport shuttle toward Terminal 1 if required.
3. Go to the Regionalbahnhof under / connected to Terminal 1.
4. Buy an RMV ticket covering Frankfurt city and Frankfurt Airport.
5. Board S-Bahn S8 or S9 toward Frankfurt city center.
6. Get off at Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, Hauptwache, Konstablerwache or the stop closest to your destination.
7. Keep your ticket ready for inspection.
8. Transfer to U-Bahn, tram, bus, taxi or another train if needed.

Do not board without a valid ticket. Frankfurt public transport uses ticket inspections, and fines for travelling without a valid ticket can be expensive. Buy your ticket from RMV machines, the RMVgo app or another official channel before boarding.

Which ticket do you need from Frankfurt Airport?

For most visitors travelling from Frankfurt Airport to the city center, you need an RMV ticket covering Frankfurt Airport and Frankfurt city. The airport is not simply part of the basic inner-city Frankfurt fare area. This is important because a ticket valid only for Frankfurt city may not cover the airport.

The airport is in its own RMV fare area, often shown as Flughafen or tariff area 5090. Frankfurt city is a separate tariff area. Therefore, when buying a ticket, choose your actual destination such as Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, Hauptwache, Konstablerwache, Messe or your hotel area. The machine or app will calculate the correct fare.

If you plan several trips on the same day, compare a single ticket with a day ticket covering the airport and Frankfurt. If you are travelling as a group, a group day ticket may be very good value. If you plan museum visits and tourist discounts, the Frankfurt Card may also be worth comparing.

Frankfurt Airport to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof

Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is the main railway station and the most common airport train destination. Take S8 or S9 from the Regionalbahnhof to Hauptbahnhof. The journey is direct and short.

Hauptbahnhof is useful for hotels in Bahnhofsviertel, Gallus, Westend, the Messe area via onward transport, and long-distance train connections. It is also a major interchange for U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams, regional trains and ICE trains.

The area around Hauptbahnhof is practical but busy. If your hotel is close to the station, the S-Bahn is very convenient. If your hotel is several blocks away and you have luggage, a short taxi from Hauptbahnhof may be easier.

Frankfurt Airport to Hauptwache and Zeil

Hauptwache is one of the best stations for Frankfurt’s city center shopping area, especially Zeil, Goethestraße, Fressgass, central hotels and the Innenstadt district.

If your destination is near Hauptwache, you may not need to get off at Hauptbahnhof. Depending on the S-Bahn service and route, continuing to Hauptwache or transferring at Hauptbahnhof can be better. Always check the RMV route planner for the exact connection on your travel date.

For many tourists staying near Zeil or central shopping streets, Hauptwache is a better final rail stop than Hauptbahnhof.

Frankfurt Airport to Konstablerwache

Konstablerwache is useful for the eastern end of Zeil, local restaurants, nightlife, city-center hotels and connections to U-Bahn or tram routes.

S-Bahn lines through the city tunnel often serve Konstablerwache after Hauptwache. If your hotel is near Konstablerwache or the eastern Innenstadt, staying on the S-Bahn past Hauptbahnhof may save time and walking.

Frankfurt Airport to Römer and Old Town

Römer and the reconstructed Old Town area are among Frankfurt’s main tourist sights. There is no airport train stop directly at Römer, so you will need a short onward connection or walk.

Take S8 or S9 to Hauptwache or Konstablerwache, then walk or use U-Bahn/tram depending on your exact destination. With luggage, taxi from Hauptbahnhof or airport may be easier if your hotel is directly around Römer or the river.

Frankfurt Airport to Messe Frankfurt

Messe Frankfurt is one of Europe’s major exhibition centers. The best airport route depends on your exact hall, hotel and trade fair schedule.

Many visitors take S8/S9 to Hauptbahnhof and then transfer to S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram or taxi toward Messe. During major fairs, public transport can be busy, and taxis may be in high demand.

If you are travelling for business with luggage, taxi or private transfer can be simpler. If you are travelling light, train plus local connection is usually better value.

Frankfurt Airport to Westend

Westend is a business and residential district north of the city center, with many hotels, offices and conference locations. Public transport from the airport usually involves S-Bahn to Hauptbahnhof, Hauptwache or another central stop, then U-Bahn, tram or walking.

Taxi can be convenient for business travelers going directly to a hotel or office, especially with luggage.

Frankfurt Airport to Sachsenhausen

Sachsenhausen is south of the Main River and famous for apple wine taverns, residential streets and local nightlife. It is not directly the first airport train stop, but it is easy with a transfer.

Take S8/S9 to Hauptbahnhof or another suitable station and continue by U-Bahn, tram, S-Bahn or taxi depending on your exact destination. If your hotel is in Sachsenhausen with luggage, taxi may be easier.

Frankfurt Airport to Ostend and European Central Bank

Ostend and the European Central Bank area are east of the city center. Many S-Bahn services continue through the city tunnel beyond Hauptbahnhof, making rail a good option if your destination is near an S-Bahn station.

Check the RMV route planner for the exact station. Depending on your destination, Ostendstraße or another eastern stop may be useful.

Frankfurt Airport to Frankfurt Süd

Frankfurt Süd is a major station south of the Main River. It is useful for Sachsenhausen, local rail connections and some onward routes.

Depending on the current timetable, you may travel by S-Bahn or regional connection with a transfer. For many visitors, S-Bahn to Hauptbahnhof plus local connection may be easiest.

ICE or S-Bahn: which train should you take?

Many travelers see ICE trains at Frankfurt Airport and wonder if they should take one into the city. For a simple airport-to-Frankfurt city transfer, the answer is usually no. The S-Bahn is normally cheaper, frequent and designed for local travel.

ICE or IC trains are useful if you are continuing beyond Frankfurt to another city, or if your ticket already includes a long-distance connection. They are not usually the best value for airport to Hauptbahnhof only.

Use the S-Bahn if:

• you are going to Frankfurt city center,
• you want the cheapest practical train option,
• you need Hauptbahnhof, Hauptwache or Konstablerwache,
• you are not continuing to another city by ICE,
• you want a frequent local service.

Use ICE / IC if:

• you are continuing to Cologne, Stuttgart, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg or another city,
• your long-distance ticket starts at Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof,
• you need a booked long-distance train,
• you want long-distance rail comfort and your ticket justifies it,
• you are not simply travelling into Frankfurt city center.

Taxi from Frankfurt Airport to city center

A taxi is the easiest door-to-door option from Frankfurt Airport to your hotel. Official taxi ranks are located outside the terminal arrivals areas, and taxis operate around the clock.

Taxi is more expensive than the S-Bahn, but it can be worth it if you have heavy luggage, travel with children, arrive late, stay away from stations or need to reach a business address directly.

In light traffic, taxi can be reasonably quick. During peak hours, road traffic can make taxi slower than the S-Bahn. For hotels near Hauptbahnhof or city tunnel S-Bahn stations, the train is often faster and cheaper.

Taxi is best if:

• you have several large suitcases,
• you are travelling with children,
• you arrive very late or very early,
• your hotel is far from a station,
• you are going directly to a business meeting,
• you want direct door-to-door travel.

Private transfer from Frankfurt Airport

A private transfer is the most comfortable option from Frankfurt Airport to the city. A driver meets you at arrivals and takes you directly to your hotel, apartment, office, trade fair venue or another destination.

This option is more expensive than S-Bahn and often more expensive than taxi, but it can be useful for business travelers, groups, families, VIP arrivals, late-night arrivals or people continuing beyond Frankfurt.

Private transfers are also practical if you are travelling to places outside central Frankfurt, such as Wiesbaden, Mainz, Darmstadt, Bad Homburg or corporate campuses not well served by public transport.

Rideshare and app-based rides from Frankfurt Airport

App-based ride services may be available from Frankfurt Airport depending on local regulations, demand and pickup zones. They can be useful if you prefer app-based booking, cashless payment and fare estimates.

Pickup locations may not be the same as official taxi ranks, so follow the app instructions carefully after booking. During peak times, fares can increase, and a normal taxi or S-Bahn may be better value.

Bus from Frankfurt Airport to the city

Buses serve Frankfurt Airport, but they are usually not the best option for first-time visitors going to Frankfurt city center. The S-Bahn is faster, more frequent and easier for central destinations.

Buses can be useful for airport hotels, nearby towns, local districts, long-distance coach travel or specific destinations not well served by the S-Bahn. If a route planner suggests a bus, check whether it is actually more convenient than train plus local transfer.

Best option by traveler type

First-time visitor

Use the S-Bahn S8 or S9 from the Regionalbahnhof. It is the easiest, fastest and best-value route to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and the central city tunnel.

Budget traveler

Use the S-Bahn with the correct RMV airport ticket. Avoid taxi unless your hotel is inconvenient by public transport or you arrive very late with luggage.

Business traveler

Use S-Bahn for hotels near Hauptbahnhof, Hauptwache or central stations. Use taxi or private transfer for offices, Messe hotels, Westend addresses or meeting venues away from stations.

Family traveler

Compare the cost of multiple S-Bahn tickets with taxi or private transfer. With children, strollers and luggage, taxi may be easier even if public transport is cheaper.

Late-night traveler

Check S-Bahn operating times before arrival. If services are reduced or your hotel is far from a station, taxi or private transfer may be more comfortable.

Long-distance rail traveler

If your final destination is another city, use Frankfurt Airport Fernbahnhof for ICE / IC services. Do not go into Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof unless your rail route requires it.
