Where is Melbourne Airport?

Melbourne Airport, also known as Tullamarine Airport, is located northwest of Melbourne’s CBD. It is the main international and domestic airport for Melbourne and should not be confused with Avalon Airport, which is much farther from the city and uses different transfer options.

Melbourne Airport has several terminals. Terminal 2 is the main international terminal, while Terminals 1, 3 and 4 serve domestic and low-cost airlines. SkyBus City Express serves the main airport terminal area and is designed for city-bound passengers.

The airport is connected to the city by road, primarily via the Tullamarine Freeway and CityLink. Because there is no direct airport train, road traffic can affect journey times for SkyBus, taxis, rideshares and private transfers.

Is there a train from Melbourne Airport to the city?

No. Melbourne Airport does not currently have a direct train service to the CBD. This is the most important difference between Melbourne and cities such as Sydney, Brisbane or Vancouver, where rail links connect the airport to the city.

For visitors, this means the main airport transfer choices are SkyBus, taxi, rideshare, private transfer or a public bus connection. The cheapest option usually requires bus plus train, while the simplest public option is SkyBus.

Best overall option: SkyBus Melbourne City Express

The SkyBus Melbourne City Express is usually the best airport transfer for most tourists. It connects Melbourne Airport with Southern Cross Station, a major city transport hub on the western edge of the CBD.

SkyBus is popular because it is simple. You do not need to plan local bus transfers, you do not need to navigate suburban train routes from the airport, and you do not need to worry about taxi meters or rideshare surge pricing. You board at the airport and travel directly to Southern Cross Station.

The main limitation is that SkyBus takes you to Southern Cross, not necessarily to your exact hotel. If your hotel is near Southern Cross, Docklands, Spencer Street, Collins Street or the western CBD, SkyBus is excellent. If your hotel is in Southbank, East Melbourne, Carlton, Fitzroy, South Yarra or St Kilda, you may need tram, taxi or rideshare after arriving at Southern Cross.

Choose SkyBus if:

• you are travelling alone or as a couple,
• you are staying in the CBD or near Southern Cross Station,

How to take SkyBus from Melbourne Airport to the CBD

2. Go to the correct SkyBus stop for your terminal.
3. Buy your ticket online, through the SkyBus app or at a self-service kiosk if available.
4. Board the Melbourne City Express service toward Southern Cross Station.
5. Store luggage in the coach luggage area as directed.
6. Travel to Southern Cross Station.
7. Continue on foot, by tram, train, taxi or rideshare to your final hotel.

SkyBus tickets are separate from Melbourne’s myki system. Do not try to use myki on SkyBus. If you plan to continue by tram or train after Southern Cross, you may need myki or another valid public transport payment option for the onward journey.

SkyBus to Southern Cross Station

Southern Cross Station is the main city arrival point for SkyBus Melbourne City Express. It is located on Spencer Street, close to Docklands, Marvel Stadium, the western CBD, Collins Street, Bourke Street and the Free Tram Zone.

If your hotel is near Southern Cross, SkyBus is very convenient. Several major hotels are within walking distance. If your hotel is farther east near Federation Square, Parliament, Fitzroy Gardens or East Melbourne, you may prefer a tram, taxi or rideshare from Southern Cross.

Southern Cross is also a major train and coach hub, making it useful if you are connecting to regional Victoria or public transport within the city.

Using the Free Tram Zone after SkyBus

Melbourne has a Free Tram Zone in the central city. This can be useful after arriving at Southern Cross Station because many CBD hotels and attractions are inside or near this area.

If your accommodation is in the CBD, Docklands or near central tram routes, you may be able to continue from Southern Cross by tram without paying an additional fare inside the Free Tram Zone. However, the Free Tram Zone has boundaries, so check whether your destination is inside the zone before relying on it.

For visitors staying outside the Free Tram Zone, such as St Kilda, South Yarra, Richmond, Brunswick, Carlton edges or Fitzroy, you will usually need myki for public transport after leaving the free area.

Melbourne Airport to CBD by taxi

A taxi is the easiest door-to-door option from Melbourne Airport to the city center. It is more expensive than SkyBus for one person, but it can be very convenient with luggage, children, late arrivals or hotels far from Southern Cross Station.

Taxis from Melbourne Airport to the CBD are metered, and fares vary by traffic, route, time of day, toll roads and applicable airport charges. The common route to the CBD often uses CityLink, which can add tolls to the fare.

For a group of three or four people, taxi can become competitive with multiple SkyBus tickets, especially if you would need a second taxi or tram ride from Southern Cross to your hotel.

Private transfer from Melbourne Airport

This route requires a myki card and is much less convenient than SkyBus. It involves more stops, transfers and longer travel time. It is best for budget travelers, light luggage and visitors comfortable with local transport.

For most first-time tourists arriving after a long flight, SkyBus is usually easier. But for backpackers, long-stay visitors or travelers who already understand Melbourne’s myki system, the bus plus train route can reduce cost.

Melbourne Airport to Southern Cross Station

Southern Cross Station is the main SkyBus city terminal and one of the best places to arrive if your hotel is in the western CBD, Docklands or near Spencer Street.

From Southern Cross, you can connect to trains, trams, regional coaches, taxis and many hotels. The station is also inside or very close to the Free Tram Zone, which makes onward travel easier for many city hotels.

If your hotel is near Flinders Street, Federation Square or the eastern CBD, you can continue by tram, train or taxi from Southern Cross.

Melbourne Airport to Flinders Street and Federation Square

Flinders Street Station and Federation Square are on the eastern side of the CBD and are not the SkyBus city terminal. If you take SkyBus, you will arrive at Southern Cross first, then continue by tram, train, taxi, rideshare or walking depending on luggage and exact hotel location.

If you are travelling light, Free Tram Zone routes may help you move across the CBD. With luggage, taxi or rideshare from the airport directly to your hotel may be easier.

Melbourne Airport to Southbank and Crown

Southbank and Crown Melbourne are across the Yarra River from the CBD. SkyBus to Southern Cross can work, followed by a tram, short taxi, rideshare or walk depending on hotel location.

However, Southbank hotels are not always convenient from Southern Cross with luggage. If you are staying at Crown, Southbank Promenade or a hotel near the river, a taxi or rideshare from the airport may be the simplest option.

Melbourne Airport to Docklands

Docklands is one of the easier hotel areas to reach from Southern Cross Station. Many Docklands hotels, Marvel Stadium, Victoria Harbour and waterfront apartment areas are close to the SkyBus arrival area or accessible by free tram.

If your hotel is in Docklands, SkyBus is often a very good choice. Check walking distance from Southern Cross before deciding whether you need a taxi for the final leg.

Melbourne Airport to Carlton and Fitzroy

Carlton and Fitzroy are north and northeast of the CBD. They are popular for restaurants, cafés, nightlife and boutique accommodation, but they are not directly served by SkyBus.

You can take SkyBus to Southern Cross and then use tram, taxi or rideshare. With luggage, direct taxi or rideshare from the airport is often easier. For budget travelers, SkyBus plus tram can work if your hotel is close to a tram stop.

Melbourne Airport to St Kilda

St Kilda is a bayside area south of the CBD. It is not in the city center and requires additional travel from Southern Cross if you take the standard City Express SkyBus.

Melbourne Airport to South Yarra and Richmond
